Checking my settlement menu, I see the next settlement in need is Abernathy Farm. They only need a bit more to their water supply, so this should be a brief stop. Oddly, once I get there, the alert for water goes away and I realize they have enough pumps. They are still not too happy though, only at 55%. I’m about to leave, when there’s a huge explosion. The Abernathy family members near me pull out guns and head around the back of the house, where Lucy is quite hurt and there’s a supermutant coming for her. I take it out before it gets there. Reconstructing the scene, I figure out a supermutant suicider had caused the explosion.

I’m just about to relax again, when I hear gunfire and am notified of a quest to help defend Abernathy farm. I come around back, expecting more supermutants, and find out it is the Gunners this time. About three of them are attacking the farm, so I pull out my sniper rifle and take them out. At least this settlement management was exciting. I talk with Connie Abernathy afterwards to trade some things. She brings up her daughter, the one whose things I got back from raiders after she had been killed. Connie thanks me again and reminisces, thinking about all the rules she had set and how her daughter had hated them. I told her she did her best, but she doubts it, saying she knew the risks when she decided to bring children into this world. I reassure her and sell her a couple of mines before going on my way. This conversation would perhaps have been meaningful for me if I had more interaction with the Abernathy family, but as it is I find myself struggling to remember the details of what had happened. I’ve been doing so much in the world, so much time has passed, and the Abernathy farm isn’t really on the way to much of anything. More ongoing relationships would, of course, require more dialogue, and this isn’t the kind of thing Bethesda is known for, so I don’t fault them for the emotion falling flat here.

County Crossing has an alert that says its Defense is 0 for some reason, so I head there next. This appears to be another glitch, as upon arriving the alert goes away and the Defense reads at 5. So apparently their settlement updates aren’t entirely flawless.

It’s later on in the evening, but I decide to head to Taffington Boathouse, which has 0 in pretty much everything. The menu also says it has two people, which is odd because I don’t recall putting up a settlement beacon and it was empty when I found it. This was supposed to be a waterfront getaway cabin, not some random folks’ settlement.

When I arrive, I see what at first appears to be someone walking towards me with a chainsaw, which is a tad bit creepy. Then I realize there are a couple of Minutemen with their weird laser muskets. They say “Hello, General!” and then head on their way. Apparently they are just patrolling all my settlements, which is a nice touch.

I walk up and a settler introduces himself and asks if I need him to do anything. So this scroungy guy is settling in my summer home. Well, at least he’s polite about it and I guess the place could use a caretaker.

Since it’s already picked up some settlers, I suppose the Boathouse could use some expansion. I put in a nice large water purifier in the lake, build a generator to run it off of, and build some automated turrets, as well as a defensive wall on the side weakest to attack. I briefly consider building some kind of riverside casino on the water here, and then realize I have better things to do with my time.

Since it’s been a somewhat light day, I decide to head over and check out the mods. My first pick is a mod that lets me have Dogmeat and another companion at the same time, because apparently that was the original intention and it makes no sense that you can’t. I also download the Full Dialogue Interface mod, as the paraphrasing has bothered me in the past. It could be clunky in implementation though, and apparently may need to be loaded last to work at all. I favorited many other items I might revisit later.

PS Giant Cats, which I found humorous, but uncalled for. Craftable Cats is a bit more useful though. Cats do add happiness!
