Starting the day on a ship on top of a skyscraper is certainly more scenic, to say the least. Also, more importantly, slightly closer to the Freedom Trail.

It’s a very difficult trail to pick up, and I’m not sure if I’m picking it back up at the correct place or if I’ve skipped some markers, as I spot it across a street but can’t find where it went to get across there. The amount of rubble in the area makes things tough. I’ve actually been critiquing the game for not making me puzzle things out more, however, so I welcome the change.

Ducking through an alley to explore a little bit rather than following the trail directly actually works to my benefit, as I get the drop on some super mutants that would have been laying in wait along the path. The house I ambushed them from turns out to be Paul Revere’s house, and there’s a marker out in front of it pointing to 8D.

I explore the area nearby for any supermutant surprises and find none. However, I spot a radstag doe in the distance. My looting compulsion makes radstag a valuable resource, as you can grill their meat to enhance your carry weight. Having decided this was an acceptable trade-off even if I feel bad about killing otherwise innocent creatures, I pull out my sniper rifle and find myself in the strange position of deer hunting. I kill it with one shot, but then spot a Legendary Glowing Radstag buck. This gives me some pause. On the one hand, the creature is unique and actually quite beautiful. On the other, I am driven by my compulsion to loot in TWO ways now—one because of the meat, and another because legendary creatures usually carry special items. I ultimately kill it, but I think the fact that I had to rationalize it to myself is significant.

Going to collect the meat takes me to a strangely beautiful abandoned waterside park that turns macabre when I realize there is a corpse burning atop the torch monument. I’m rewarded with a piece of armor that makes it harder to detect me when sneaking, which seems appropriate for an item gained through hunting. I leave the waterside park to continue the trail, but make a note to come back here for more exploring later.

The next leg of the journey is right around the corner at the Old North Church, just beyond a statue of Paul Revere. A later sits on the doorstep next to the plaque. The trail ends here, marked 1R. I hope I’ve collected all the information I need, but I surmise figuring out the riddle won’t be necessary to progress, as it rarely has in this game.

As I creep into the building, I find the first room empty and devoid of any interesting decor. The design of the space is clearly funneling me into the next room where, after headshotting a feral ghoul peaking out from behind the pew and killing a legendary one that rises up to my right, I am arrested by the majestic open space, a beam of light pouring through the open ceiling. This feels like a place of import. To my right, where I shot the legendary, I notice the same painted lantern symbol that was marked outside by the plaque.

I explore further into the room, enjoying the lighting in the sanctuary. I stop briefly to admire how neatly my shot took the top of the ghoul’s skull off. Then I stop to consider the profanity of marveling at my own violence so soon after marveling at the beauty of the scenery, which is really a good encapsulation of most of the video games I play. So many video games arrest both with beauty and with violence, alternating between the two and appealing to both our best and worst natures in a cycle. Further in, stairs go up to the balconies, and in a space so dark beyond that I have to turn on my light, more stairs go up to somewhere else.

I head to the balconies first, but they hold little of interest. The dark passage beyond, however, leads to the steeple. Unfortunately there’s only a sniper rifle up there, which would be nice if my sniper rifle wasn’t so good already. I return to the sanctuary and make my way around back to where I shot the legendary feral under the lantern symbol. It has a nice gamma gun, but again, a bit worse than what I have. Beyond it is an open doorway and stairs leading down. Further on, I see the lantern symbol once again. “I had no idea these crypts were under here!” Preston exclaims.

The feral ghouls certainly did, as I encounter some moving forward. I also take the time to note some of the clearer tombstones. If there are crypts down there in reality, I wonder if these tombstones in the game are a match. “I really don’t like this,” Preston says after we encounter yet another ghoul down the hall. You’d think he’d be used to it by now. When I reach the end of the tunnel, I see as a pleasant surprise that I WILL have to know the proper combination!

“Ah, it spins,” my character remarks as I spin the wheel of letters and select R for the first. It is a bit odd and jarring to hear my characters voice. If someone was just playing and not taking detailed notes as I have been, I imagine this might seem daunting, but perhaps they would just go to the Internet if they had trouble. Looking back to previous posts, I enter A for the second. It becomes clear fairly quickly that I need to be spelling RAILROAD here, but there are multiples of some of those letters so it still might be difficult (unless using any is allowed). After fretting about getting it wrong, I finally open the passageway.

When I step forwards, spotlights shine on me and a woman is talking to me. They have guns trained on me, but I’m not concerned. She asks who I am, and I reply by asking who SHE is. To which she replies “In a world filled with fear and suspicion, we’re the synths only friend. We’re the Railroad.” I explain that I’ve been looking for them after hearing a rumor, then some other guy named Deacon shows up and the boss lady asks for intel. He replies “Newsflash boss, this guy is kind of a big deal out there.” I wonder if he would have had different dialogue had I managed to get here before making so much impact. Since I went against the Institute previously, I’ve been vouched for, and the conversation continues. Desdemona, as she calls herself, explains that the Institute treats synths like slaves, and they’re out to free them. She likes my responses that I’m willing to serve my fellow man, even if he happens to be a synth, so I am cleared to work with them and referred to Deacon for details.

I put on my best, just in case any charisma is needed, and talk with him. My persuasion reveals that they’ve just gone through a crisis and that they need me. They seem noble, so despite my mistrust of synths after the Valentine incident, I’m inclined to help. Deacon wants to bring me further into the fold than Desdemona, so he has a job meant to get attention and prove my worth. I agree, and he tells me to meet him on the freeway outside of Lexington. Looks like I’ll be going back to my old stomping grounds soon.

Of course, I have other business I’ve promised to take care of first. So next it’s time for some shuteye then finally to return to Diamond City soon. I leveled up upon discovering the railroad, so it’s time to spend that 3rd perk point as well! I add an extra rank to Awareness to give a 5% increase to hit chance and damage in VATS.
