Getting up early in the morning, I sell some goods to Supervisor Greene at Gray Gardens, then store some junk as well before moving out to the nearby Corvega Assembly Plant. A bright, slightly smoggy morning greets me as I head around towards the back of the plant, hoping to remember my way to the secret entrance in the pipe. A raider towards the top of the exterior tower spots me, but my sniper rifle takes care of the problem.

Almost by instinct I make my way around the outer stone wall directly to the open pipe, even though I’ve only been here once before. Sometimes I feel my spatial mapping in video games is better than my mapping of the real world. They have, as expected, replaced the turrets and the alarm system in here somehow. The way this place repopulates without any new terminal recordings or other signs that they are a completely different raider group really breaks the suspension of disbelief, especially with how often I’ve had to visit this place.

Once again, I make my way up through the steaming tunnels to the sub-basement, populated by the same raiders in the same positions. This time around my goal is to find the path of least resistance to get what I want, rather than to clear the whole place out. They can have the damn place if they want it that badly. I avoid the large rooms and make my way into the more claustrophobic side room where I take care of the raiders and turret, then wait for the feral ghouls to crawl out of the same grate they always crawl out of.

This route puts me out at the bottom of the stairwell that should take me up to where the part I seek is located. The protectron has magically revived and been put back in it’s docking pod, the terminal to be hacked again as I unleash it and let it fight the raiders for me for a bit. After awhile I get bored and return it to its charging pod. I’ll mop up the rest on my own.

As expected, the part appears to be over in the isolated section on the top floor, so much easier to get to now that I know about the button that extends the catwalk (unlike the first time I came here, which cost me some good loot when I was unable to get to one of the bodies).

I grab the loot and run back out the way I came—a clean surgical strike with minimal resource expenditures or casualties. It’s still early afternoon when I exit onto the streets of Lexington. I can hear missile explosions and combat somewhere nearby, but it no longer concerns me. Probably Gunners, raiders, or Brotherhood of Steel squaring off. I fast travel back to the USS Constitution.

The sun is setting when I arrive. Back in the captain’s cabin, I prepare for the final installation. All around, the various robots still go about their duties. Their continued dedication to a purpose long since irrelevant is in some ways admirable and in other ways disturbing.

I speak to Admiral Ironsides, who explains the true purpose behind my attempts to repair the vessel. They intend to activate the rockets to propel the ship away from where it has landed and into the Atlantic, where they can defend the commonwealth on the seas. Just as the robots are preparing to embark, the scavengers from earlier attack. I’m kind of done feeling sorry for them. The move to attack a superior position is just stupid, especially when completely unprovoked, and I’ve tried to get them to see reason before. I pull out my sniper rifle and execute every single one of the crazy bastards one by one, made all the easier on my conscience by the fact that they are throwing molotov cocktails at me constantly. (How are they even throwing those to the top deck of a ship that is itself on the top floor of a bank building?) I only hesitate when everything settles and Davies lies gravely wounded. Perhaps he’s learned his lesson, but I don’t really want to give him time to recover and backstab me as I’m leaving. Besides, he has even more reason to hate me now. I take aim and end it quickly with a headshot.

When I go back inside the ship, I see the fight is still going on in here. The scavengers have somehow gotten past the first two floors (HEAVILY guarded by turrets and robots) and have almost reached the top deck. I take them all out, leveling up in the process, but some of them are tough. They sure did invest an insane amount of lives and resources on a difficult task with very little loot waiting to reward them. Davies and Mandy Stiles must have been incredibly persuasive.

I move through looting the bodies on both sides, also keeping a count. No use letting anything go to waste. One of them has a pistol that does 50% bonus damage against robots. I guess these scavengers REALLY hate robots. They would have to be to throw away their lives like that. My count is about 16 dead scavengers to about 5 dead protectrons (though I killed at least half of those scavengers myself if not more). That’s just the ones that made it into the ship. Much respect for the woman who decided it was a good idea to attack a bunch of laser-wielding robots with a walking cane, though.

I go back and speak with Ironsides again. He rewards me with a portable cannon called Broadsider and tells me there’s just one more thing to do—switch on the power to give them their last push from the top of a nearby apartment building likely controlled by scavengers. Well, they already hate me, might as well invade their home now. I did try to get them to see reason earlier. It’s a shame the game does not allow a persuasion attempt after a significant show of force. At this point, I should be able to fly the white flag and convince them it just isn’t worth it to fight and they should just let the ship leave.

0625161835

0625161836

I count at least 11 more scavengers dead outside. With those numbers, they could have built and maintained a sizable settlement, but instead they chose to squander it on this foolish attack. I head to the switch at the top of the apartment building, carefully avoiding large holes in the floor as I make my way up. I am thankful I don’t have to decide whether to kill any scavengers in the building. Aside from one that fired on me from outside before I even approached, there are none here, which makes my conscience more clear than if I had come into their home and started shooting.

If this goes according to plan, two ships will dot the skyline briefly—the one I’m about to help lift off, and the Brotherhood of Steel airship which even now hovers not too far away. It is a wonderful sight to see the ship take off, but any feelings of accomplishment are dwarfed by the hilarity that ensues as the ship crash lands yet again on a taller building. I can hear the robots broadcasting a celebration of their success, “one step closer to the Atlantic… by my calculations within another century we shall finally reach the ocean.” Preston remarks “Well, at least WE know how it got up there… not that anybody would believe us,” calling back to his previous musing on the various stories about how it reached the Savings and Loans building. Quite right, Preston. I do appreciate his insights sometimes.

I’m trying to decide where to settle in for the night, when I spot a notification in my quests to help defend Taffington Boathouse. So I suppose that decides things. I fast travel there and I’m dropped right in the middle of a group of raiders, including one with power armor. After dying (twice) I take the strategy lesson Fallout 4 has repeatedly taught me: If all else fails, do some drugs and try again. This time I immediately take some Buffjet for survivability and the time slow-down effect. This lets me circle behind the guy and pop two shots in his fusion core, shoot the raiders beside him in their weapon arms, and then run for my life ahead of the essentially mini-nuke explosion that follows. After this, it’s a simple matter to clean up the couple of raiders that survive. Time for a couple hours of deserved rest. Next time on the agenda: wrapping up a few quests near Diamond City, reuniting with Piper, and perhaps finally heading to meet the Brotherhood of Steel at their HQ.
