Fallout Day 18

Level 16
It’s time to make a showing of the Minutemen once again, with two missions in the Commonwealth to get to. I fix up the power armor and give it a fresh coat of paint in the Minutemen style. Then I go see Preston Garvey. He says he got a strange message from a robot saying it was from Graygarden asking for help. Maybe we ought to check it out. It does seem to be on the way to Oberland Station where I have to help out another settlement.

I fast travel to the Museum of Freedom, surprised to arrive surrounded by enemies. I kill each raider with one shot. It’s almost laughable. A ways out of town a brahmin laden with trading goods runs past at full speed. I wonder if it’s owner has been killed. Soon, I find some raiders holding up a lady named Trudy. Perhaps the owner? The raider, Wolfgang, tells me this doesn’t involve me. I tell him to lower his weapon or it will, but it seems I’m less persuasive with my armor on because he attacks. I kill the raiders easily, but a Mr. Gutsy comes along. I don’t know if it’s with them or just happens to be wandering by, but it’s packing a lot of firepower and I’m out in the open with reduced VATS in this power armor. After dealing with that, the two supermutants that come out of the forest are nothing. I ask Trudy if she’s alright and she thanks me, gives me 100 caps, and says she’ll trade with me, which is a nice bonus. I’ve got to repair my armor before continuing, so I head back to the Red Rocket truck stop where I know there’s a power armor workstation.

By the time I make it back to Drumlin’s Diner where Trudy is set up it is 6 pm. I come across a house a short distance away. There are Gunners inside, but they aren’t hostile like all the others have been. Or maybe they’re intimidated by the power armor. Their leader, Dreth, says she wants to trade. Wouldn’t hurt to look. I don’t trust them, and I don’t like them, but a bit of tense but peaceful exchange is refreshing in its own way. There’s a big Wicked Shipping truck nearby with a master lock on its cargo I make a note of. At the train derailment, I turn off the road to follow the tracks towards Graygarden.

There’s some power armor in a locked cage on the train, but when I hack into the terminal and open it, turns out to be only partial armor. So much for my dreams of getting Preston geared up along with me for this mission. Still, replacement parts are here for any future need. Further along there are some radioactive barrels and Feral Ghouls which are dispatched easily. Soon I am at Graygarden. There are robots collecting food outside, tending to the garden. Supervisor Greene seems the one to talk to. He acts like a game show host, which I acknowledge and play along for a free 100 caps. I don’t ask for more because I figure it’s best not to push a crazy robot. Supervisor White explains how they run the place, and why they each have unique personalities, due to their creator’s love of TV. She also requests that I fix the water around there, as there’s some sort of holdup from a water treatment plant to the west. The way this robot is flirting with me is a tad uncomfortable. Must be the power armor.

It’s near midnight, so I elect to head to Oberland Station first to see what aid they require. The water treatment plant job doesn’t seem as pressing. Fortunately, the tracks seem to lead right across the river to the station. It’s a good thing the settler’s don’t have a programmed realistic response to being woken up by a man in power armor, which would involve pants-soiling at the very least. The settler quite comfortably asks if I’m with the Minutemen and directs me to some raiders operating out of Back Street Apparel. Stifling a snicker, I decide to head there directly.

I’m halfway there when I spot supermutants. Great, I’m thinking to myself, but just as I prepare to snipe them, they start shooting elsewhere. Helicopters are overhead. Brotherhood of Steel! And they’re firing on the supermutants. I suppose they’re really here to help out after all. No other reason to be attacking random supermutants in this area. I line up a clean shot and help out. They detect my presence, but do not stop. Once the supermutants are down they leave. But up ahead I spot some Brotherhood Knights in power armor not moving. It’s a little creepy actually. Hopefully just a glitch? They don’t say anything to me, but I can hear them saying “For victory!” or something over and over again.

I reach Back Street Apparel after 2 am. We’re not far from a Diamond City security checkpoint. A raider runs around the corner and stops, seemingly confused. She’s dead in one shot. Around the corner are more to kill. My only concern is my power core is running low, but I have plenty of spares. And it seems the power cores replace themselves automatically from my inventory. I was worried I’d have to get out and insert a new one. It is quite telling how, once I find myself in the flow of combat as on a trip like this one, I start seeing raiders less as people and more as targets. Despite some moral conflicts in earlier situations, I thought nothing of shooting this raider.

Inside, I hear some raiders talking. A man says, “that was a good one, have any more stories?” The woman tells of how before she met Clutch she was across the river and found this kid, 18 or 19. She’s lighting a fire and the kid says “What are you doing?” and knocks the match out of her hand. She is saying that she was so surprised she swung and broke his nose before he apologized and said he was afraid of fire. Up until this point, the story almost has a humanizing factor for the raiders. They tell stories and interact with others, have memories just like us. Then she gets to the part where she gets an idea, pretends to be sorry, gets the kid drunk til he passes out, then ties a bunch of mattresses together around a center one and floats them down river, setting all the mattresses around the one he’s on aflame “laughing our asses off.” At this point I kind of want to kill her, but she goes on to say when they realize the kid isn’t going to wake up they throw rocks at him. “The flames were so high,” she continues, “imagine what it must have been like for him, waking up not knowing where he was and all he sees is fire. At this point, I’m laughing so hard I fall down.” Turns out the kid couldn’t swim and drowned after that, “anyway, that’s that.”

At this point I decide straight up killing isn’t enough and, just to be poetic about it, start hurling molotov cocktails at the raiders before mopping up with my laser rifle. I’m pleased I believe I killed the one telling the story with my second or third throw. Clutch comes out and goes down quickly to my rifle. I can still hear a couple of them left somewhere, so I stalk around, as much as one can stalk in a set of 10 feet tall armor. I’ve almost used up all my energy cells for the rifle by the time I’m done, but it’s worth it. Plus, there’s a Grognak the Barbarian comic upstairs “Lost in the Snows of Lust.” Not that melee critical hits do much for me. I head back to Oberland station by 9:30 a.m. I’m rewarded and they decide to support the Minutemen. I build an open air roofed structure with a couple of beds in it so we can call it a night.
