Fallout Day 11 (and some of 12)

No Comments on Fallout Day 11 (and some of 12)

I wake well rested and head out. None of the shopkeepers are out this early before 7, so I figure a morning swim and clearing the water supply will do. I jump in and am immediately hit with heavy radiation. Should have prepared for that, but I guess I wasn’t expecting it in town. I climb out and change into my insulated jumpsuit to try again with some rad-x. I stop by Dr. Sun’s to get my radiation cured then have a meal and make some things at the chemistry station.

Nearby is a drug dealer who offers cash for some mutated ferns, which I already happen to have. I found some during my long fight with the ghouls nearby. I cash in and head out. On my way out of town I see Miss Edna the robot and Mister Zwicky standing near the pastor. They are getting married. I kind of feel happy for them, even if I’m not sure exactly how it will work out.

I remember Piper’s offer for me to stop by her office, but I’d prefer to go fetch the paint and maybe clear the tunnels during daylight. I’ll return this evening.
This was an easy run. The only enemies I face are a few radroaches, plus another legendary radroach with some good gear in its belly. Mixed the paint and then I’m back by the early afternoon. Even picked up some of the gear I had previously dropped in the Hardware Town.

On my way in to sell some things and hand over the paint a security guard says the Bobrov brothers are looking for me. I meet Arturo Rodriguez, who seems quite friendly and helpful. I trade some things and head on. Myrna at the surplus supply store is also paranoid about Synths. What a strange town.

I get Abbott the paint and he thanks me, having me paint the first stroke. He even gives me a bonus. Now to try and talk to the Mayor, see what the Bobrov brothers want, and meet Piper this evening.
The mayor is up a rigged elevator (more like a window-washer’s lift) in the skyboxes. There, I meet Geneva, who mentions a housing permit. It’s a bit steep at 2000 caps for my current status, but it sounds like a good deal. I ask her for work, but she just directs me to the bounty board I already saw.

I find the mayor looking out a nice open window onto the city. He says he’s very busy. I’ll have to try later I suppose.

I go see Piper. She knows I’m a Vault Dweller by my PIP Boy and “fish out of water” look and wants to interview me. She asks about the vault, I am honest and reveal I was frozen, and my opinion of the wastes. I don’t know if the Institute was involved in my son’s kidnapping. I give the message to take things one day at a time. Afterwards, she offers to join me on my adventures. It’s a good interview, but I don’t want the company just yet. I have some more things to take care of.

I find an old man, Sheffield, begging for Nuka Cola, saying he can’t go into the bar and be around alcohol to get one, so I give him one. He thanks me heartily. Speaking of the bar, I guess I’d better see what the Bobrov brothers want.

It seems they want to get rid of the radio DJ, “makes me want to go back in time and make sure radio was never invented.” Vadim intimates they want to kill Travis, but ultimately it is a joke. They want to help Travis, and give him more confidence for the radio. He invites me to the back room to work on a plan. “Travis is good guy, he deserves better life!” He wants to stage a bar fight to make Travis feel more confident. He wants me to come back tomorrow evening to help.

It’s probably a little late, after 9, but I think I’ll go back to the tunnel and see if I can clear out the ghouls. I have a flashlight, after all. I find some good loot in a couple of makeshift camps. The second one, outside the tunnel has some dead feral ghouls in it. Clearing ghouls from the tunnels is a tense experience. They are fast, and the space is small. I have to take them down quickly. It is periods of combat followed by very tense and somewhat jumpy navigating of the tunnels. I find an older area of the tunnels I can unlock with the nearby terminal. Inside is a body with Detective Perry’s holotape and a revolver on it. I will have to listen to it later, along with the other holotape I have, Sheila’s.

I just now found out I can play holotapes on my Pip Boy! It seems Perry’s tape is about him smuggling goods (a lot of cigarettes and alcohol). He is talking to someone else about getting down and moving the goods, saying family was sick in New York as an excuse. This seems to suggest it it pre-war, but he mentions McDonough, which is also the name of the mayor. Curious.

Sheila’s holotape is actually about moving those mutated ferns to Diamond City, meeting someone named Dale, before being ambushed by ghouls.

In the other room, I find the corpse of Sgt. Reise. His holotape is about Perry’s partner sticking his nose where he shouldn’t be. He is in on the smuggling.

I clear a path up to an exit, also find some irradiated cockroaches and a power core. But I need to finish clearing out the area. Heading right first seems to take me everywhere but where I need to be. I do clear some more ghouls, but soon I’m at a Legendary Raider base. I take them out with ease, but almost get taken out myself with a mine on the wall. Gotta be more careful. There’s another exit up here, but again, back to the ghouls.

And what ghouls they are! I face a glowing one, the hardest I’ve yet to face. I put up a good fight but I still die. I reload and try again. It is tough in these close quarters, and they are so fast. It takes most of my ammo, a lot of backpedaling, and a lot of drugs, but I finally manage to hold out the second time. It is 8 in the morning and I am weary by the time I emerge from the tunnels and trudge back to the city. A rainy day greets me.

I want to head back, but my dog alerts me that he’s found something. He drags me down near a reservoir where there are some ruined houses and bloatflies. Can’t be worse than ghouls. Other than lining me up for mutant dogs and supermutants, I don’t know where this gets me. There’s some meds and an interesting stuffed toy, but I’m heading back. I check out another house first. This is more like it than whatever he was trying to lead me to. A terminal of some kind with Edwin’s holotape in it. His journal log tells of an industrious fellow wanting to settle down with his lady friend. Rigged up protection against bloatflies. Apparently he lost her at some point. Only a locket to remember her by. Lost it when the boat flipped over and went back out for it. Sad story. Didn’t find the locket. Found a key to the master safe in his house though. And stirred up a lot of difficult insects to deal with. Most of my ammo is gone, and now it is time to get out of here.

As I enter Diamond City, I find my interview is already in the papers. Time to check the damage. It’s actually a pretty moving take on my story, peppered though it may be with a bit of paranoia about synths and the Institute.

Taking stock of myself in town, it seems I finally have an addiction to buffout, after all that use of it in combat. I’ll have to take steps to cure it. Seems everyone knows me now, and has a fairly friendly reaction to my story.

I head back to the inn and take a nap. Need to be in top form for this crazy plan tonight.
